Clean your model

Many models and components will arrive in your hands with "mould release agent" or other contaminants on them, this is used to help remove the newly created item from the mould in which it is cast. This substance is somewhat like WD40 in that it is slightly oily, it is designed to lubricate the mould and your new toys so the people (wizards?) making them can physically get the parts out of the mould.

You will find though that this mould release agent will ruin your painting if it isn't removed properly before you start, anywhere that it is present on your model it will prevent the paint from adhering properly which will lead to it flaking away once dry.

Many different methods and chemicals may be used to clean your models however plain & simple washing up liquid will normally suffice. Ideally you can work some into a lather in using your hands or a sponge and then spread it all over the part(s) to be cleaned, using an old toothbrush if necessary to work the soap into crevices and recesses. Once the part(s) has been thoroughly cleaned it should then be very thoroughly rinsed in cold water ensuring that all the soap is washed away.

Once the model has dried out it should be examined for any traces of any substances, look for 'shiny' areas or anything that looks stained or wet. If there is any sign of anything remaining then you should go back to washing the parts again and continuing until your new model is absolutely clean.

Only now will you be ready to continue to getting some paint on your new model!
